How to Fix a PC's Registry for Free

The Windows registry is the system program that contains all the necessary files that your computer and system programs need in order to run properly. Occasionally, errors within Windows registry can be the cause of error messages or conflicts, such as "dll" error messages. Fortunately, you can clean your registry and fix these problems and conflicts for free with the multitude of third-party software available. These programs automatically scan your computer's registry for problems like ActiveX issues, missing shortcut references, obsolete software or application registry entries and unused and invalid file extensions and folders.

Follow this steps below to fix your registry:

1. Open your Web browser. Go to an authoritative computer news and/or software download Website, such as PC World, CNET Downloads, Softpedia and PCMag.com. These types of Websites list software in all types of genres that are typically spyware- and virus-free. Some computer magazine editors, such as those from PC World and PCMag.com, also try and professionally review much of the software listed. Click on the "Downloads" section of the site. Navigate to the "Utilities," "System Resources" or "Registry" category of software downloads. Or, type key words into the site's search box, such as "fix registry."
2. Look at the list of registry software programs that the computer downloads Website generates. Examples of free registry fix programs you can find include Eusing's Free Registry Cleaner, ChemTable's Registry Life, Glarysoft's Registry Repair and IOBit's IOBit Toolbox. Click on the names of the software programs to review details of the software and read about the types of registry problems or errors that it fixes. Look at the "license" type or the "price" details to make sure the software is listed as "free" or "freeware." Find the operating systems listed to make sure the software is compatible with your system.
3. Click the "Download" link for the registry software. Save the program to your computer's hard drive. Open the registry program's installation file to install the software on your computer.
4. Double-click the installed registry software program to open and launch the program. Click the "Scan registry," "Registry cleanup" button or other similarly labeled button that the program uses to scan your registry for problems. Wait for the software while it scans the Windows registry files.
5. Review the results and problems with the registry that your software finds and lists. Examples of problems and errors that registry-fixer programs typically search for and find include problems with file type associations, problems with application settings and invalid files and folders. Click the "Repair" or "Fix" button and wait while the software automatically fixes the selected registry entries and problems. Close the registry software program.
